During my 3th year at university I completed a full time placement with Let's Talk, a young persons charity with a focus on mental and sexual health based in the Craigmiller area in Edinburgh.
My main role here was to help further develop their visual language and create graphics for print to be used throughout their building, as at the time they had recently moved into a new building and were renovating. Along side my placement there was a group of students designing and installing murals throughout the building, I was lucky enough to get involved in this placement aiding in the design process and installation. We also worked alongside an interior designer to help incorporate the murals into the interior design. You can see more about this here.
For my placement I created a series of posters for their Missions, Values, Aims and Vivid Vision (MVAV), business cards, and a map. For the MVAV poster I proposed to create 4 prints that would be hung together to create one large poster due to there being a vast amount of large wall space when entering the building. For this concept I created two versions, one that was more artistic that was designed with the murals in mind so there would be a connection back to the brand and a the other with the logo at the heart of the design due to the logo having a significant amount of importance to them, however the placement chose to go forward with the poster with the logo as the main design element at the end. I also created a combined version of the MVAV poster that could be used throughout the building as they have many different rooms for counselling, activities etc.
For the business cards I created 3 colour based designs as they were the main colours used throughout their branding. For the design itself I created an illustration of the building as this was also important to them, they wanted to become a main focal point for their community as if they were the 'ray of sunshine' in the area. This idea is also repeated in the mural designs and in the map that I created.
This was all Let's Talk had asked me to create for them however, I proposed the idea of creating a map of the local area with Let's Talk at the heart of it and the other surrounding buildings that the young people who visit may also use. They were really enthusiastic about this idea and liked how it would connect them with the rest of the community and almost make them act as a meeting point if young people were to get lost.
For the design of the poster I created a map of the local area and then made illustrations of the other buildings that the young people may use, such as; the local High School, Primary School, Art Centre, Sports Centre, Health Centre and Library etc.
